August Hike By Freetime
AUGUST 2026 EXPEDITION: MONTAGNE NOIRE & GIANT SINKHOLE
1. The Route: The Heights of Cabrespine
This magnificent circuit takes you on an ascent of the Montagne Noire, alternating between Mediterranean scrubland and cooler high-altitude undergrowth. Along the way, you'll follow limestone cliffs and pass by the Roc de l'Aigle, from which there is a dizzying drop with a spectacular panoramic view of the small village of Cabrespine below.
In August, the Aude sun beats down hard on the limestone ridges. Set off very early in the morning, carry at least 2 liters of water per person, and wear good trail shoes to tackle the rocky paths.
2. The Event: Carcassonne Festivities
After your exertion, head to the legendary Cité de Carcassonne, just a 25-minute drive away. August is particularly vibrant there. Between the prestigious Festival de Carcassonne (theater, opera, and concerts under the stars in the Jean-Deschamps theater), the grand medieval jousting tournaments, and the famous Feria de Carcassonne at the end of August, your evenings will be memorable.
Good tip: After your hike, enjoy the coolness of the ramparts in the late afternoon, then savor the famous Aude wines at the nocturnal artisanal market near the Pont Vieux, with a view of the illuminated Cité.
3. The Unusual Place: The Giant Sinkhole of Cabrespine
This is the highlight (and the starting point) of your journey. This impressive chasm could easily contain the Eiffel Tower. The unusual showstopper? The Glass Belvedere, a transparent walkway suspended in the void, offering 200 meters of absolute emptiness beneath your feet. Thrills guaranteed in cool temperatures, as the interior temperature remains 14°C all year round!
